Calling All Nerds

All right guys:  I'm armed with popcorn and an Internet connection at home finally.  My Netflix account is up and running, but I've only got about 40 shows/movies in my queue, which I hear is embarrassingly small.  And, like, half of those are Doctor Who specials.

Things I like:

-Anything with David Tennant (obviously)
-Torchwood
-Robin Hood (BBC series)
-Joss Whedon
-Bones
-Eureka
-Most anything fantasy/horror lite, sci-fi lite, mysteries, histories
-Long-term plot arcs
-Watching four seasons in a week

Things I don't like:

-Anything with a sad ending (Dude, life is depressing enough.)
-War movies (see above)
-The Walking Dead (I have post-apocolyptic dreams if I want to put myself in a setting where I might be eaten, thanks.)
-Mad Men  (I gave it six episodes.  I still hate everybody.)
-Straight-up cop procedurals (I.e., I like Bones, I hate NYPD anything.)

So, lay it on me.  What do I need to watch?  What do you love?

(True:  Someone in my office just told me I need to become a mouth-breather.)

  1. I love everything on your list (except I haven't seen Robin Hood and I've only caught an episode or two of Bones). I don't like war movies unless they're the old John Wayne ones and definitely no sad movies! I DO like the Walking Dead though. I gave up on Mad Men sooner than you did; it just gave me the creeps for some reason.

Shows I watch that aren't on your list: The Mentalist, Criminal Minds, Leverage, Burn Notice (long plots and subplots), Warehouse 13, Sherlock.

    You're welcome!

    1. Thanks! I feel like The Mentalist rings a bell--that's the show where every episode has a name that something to do with the color red, right? I'll definitely have to check these out!

    1. Omigod, LOVE Firefly and Serenity. Definitely worth a rewatch. I've seen a couple of episodes of Castle, and have really liked those, too. So this looks like it has the makings of a good list. Thanks!

  4. You need to watch Downton Abbey. Maggie Smith is hilarious. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1606375/
Sam and I liked Lie to Me. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1235099/
    Have you seen the Tudors?

    1. Oh, man, I love Downton Abbey. I've seen a bit of Lie to Me, but not all of it; I'd sort of forgotten about it. And I haven't seen any of The Tudors. I was a little hesitant because Henry was a BIG man, and the guy they cast for that role isn't very big at all, which doesn't meld with what I've got in my head. But you think it's good anyway, that's enough recommendation for me!

  5. -David Tennant's Hamlet
-The Decoy Bride, starring David Tennant
    -Casanova, starring David Tennant
    -The Tudors
    -Firefly
    -Castle
    -Merlin (BBC series)
    -Warehouse 13
    -Supernatural
    -Heroes
    -Buffy
    -Angel
    -Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog
    -Downton (not Downtown!) Abbey
    -Crossing Jordan
    -Warehouse 13
    -Being Human (UK version)
    -Robin Hood (BBC series)

-Vampire Diaries, maybe? it's a bit cheesy soap opera, but still entertaining
-Pillars of the Earth, maybe? it's history (yay!), but a bit depressing
-Glorious 39, starring David Tennant, maybe? it's war-related, but more a mystery

I'd love to hear what you end up watching! Feel free to find me on Twitter if you like @MissMandamonium

    1. These are fantastic suggestions! I always hear about shows I think sound cool, but then five minutes go by and that info is lost in the ether. Thanks!

  6. I see many of my faves on those lists; I would include:

Being Human (US version rather than UK, which is more depressing IMHO)
True Blood (I stopped watching halfway thru Season 3, but still worthwhile if you're ok with ridiculousness)

    What I watch:
    Babylon 5 (current obsession)
    Farscape
    Warehouse 13
    Dead Like Me
    Primeval
    Alphas (US series on SyFy)
    Sanctuary (ditto)
    Haven (another ditto)
Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe (need to be watched in order)
Criminal Minds (gets VERY intense, a lot about serial killers, be warned)
    Burn Notice
    Royal Pains
    Castle
    Fringe (LOVE)
    Lost Girl (from Canada)
Wonderfalls (only one season but so worth it)

I could not stand Dollhouse (even among Whedonists, it's very much YMMV) and Supernatural scared the bejesus outta me, but that might work for you if you're tougher than I am.

  7. I don't have a long list for you but I second (or really third) 'Dead Like Me' and I got caught up in 'Battlestar Galactica' with Edward James Olmos (I get the Big Bang Theory references now!). :)

    1. Battlestar Galactica might be worthwhile just for that!

  8. Lots of good suggestions here. For my two cents, I was going to suggest the UK version of Being Human (if you can cope with the vampires and werewolves). Some people like the US version better, but I felt like SyFy version was a weak copy.
And if you feel like some bawdy humor, check out Coupling. (Skip the last season, they lost a crucial character and the show fell flat on it's face.)

    1. Now, don't you know I'm WAY too prim for bawdy humor?

(Sorry, I just snorted at myself a little.)

  9. Seconded: Being Human (UK), Life on Mars (UK), The IT Crowd (absolutely hilarious), and Black Books.

    Also:
Ultraviolet - obscure British series about a secret police unit fighting vampires. The unit includes Jack Davenport and the very awesome Idris Elba. One of the vampires is Stephen Moyer, long before he became Vampire Bill in True Blood.

Luther - more Idris Elba but very violent and grim.

Warehouse 13 & Eureka - clever, lighthearted, mostly upbeat science fiction.

Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies - quirky, weird, impossible to explain shows. Both feature Lee Pace, which is enough reason to watch right there.

If it's any indicator of taste, I too love Doctor Who and Torchwood (except the last season), can't watch The Walking Dead because of the nightmares it would give me, and I hate Mad Men and everybody in it (the characters, not the actors!)

    1. Ultraviolet sounds right up my alley--I'll have to look it up! And I absolutely adored Pushing Daisies--it's so sad it didn't survive the writer's strike. But if I can get my Lee Pace fix elsewhere, I guess I might continue to cope.

      Thanks!

    2. I love Lee Pace. Do you know he's going to play an elf in The Hobbit? Definitely check out Wonderfalls if you haven't seen it - it was created by the same guy that did Pushing Daisies.

  10. Ok, my list:
The 10th Kingdom (old mini series, scrambled/reworked fairy tales)
    OZ (syfy, older, quite interesting)

I can't think of anything else right now, but will let you know.

    1. Oh my god, I've probably watched the 10th Kingdom ten times--love it! To me, it's that perfect mix of slightly silly plot and fantastic characters.
