Just Say No--to Scissors

Don't run with scissors.

I'm pretty sure it's a warning exactly nobody takes seriously.  I mean, sure, children probably should avoid the motion + sharp objects equation, but we grown ups ought to be able to handle it, right?  As long as we aren't simultaneously making stabby motions with them?

Not me.  At least, I assume not--I haven't actually had a run-in with scissors yet.  But last week, I split my thumbnail smack down the middle with an apple slicer.  Two weeks ago I took a chunk out of my index finger when I was chopping vegetables and missed.  I have a nasty scar on the knobby bit of my wrist from when I juggled a razor in the shower.

If scissors are a gateway cutting tool, I've skipped straight to the hard stuff.

(True:  Super glue is a useful tool to have in one's first aid kit.)

  1. I think my worst injury was the time I peeled off a large chunk of my finger with a potato peeler. I chop so slowly because my mom once cut off the tip of her finger chopping tomatoes and it's one of my biggest fears, any recipe that involves chopping veggies usually takes me at least twice the estimated prep time...I also wanted to let you know that we've given you the Liebster Blog Award because we love your blog! Stop by and check it out!

    Cheers!

    1. Yikes! I've always been worried about that too. Kitchens seem like very high-risk areas to me. Which is one of the excuses I use to avoid cooking. And I flat-out avoid recipes that involve lots of chopping. Obviously I can't even manage just a little.

Also: Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm so flattered that you lovely ladies think so highly of me!

  2. I like NewSkin (not sure if I spelled it right). It smells like nail polish remover (which gives you an idea how it feels in an open wound), but it works pretty similarly to superglue and it's antiseptic.
Since I'm incapable of cutting, scraping, or otherwise injuring myself in a bandaid friendly place/size, it's saved my bacon a number of times. (Oh, and it's waterproof!)
I wonder if this klutziness is genetic?

    1. I've used that as well--it works pretty much the same as super glue, though it stings quite a bit less. Maybe it's the agent that makes super glue dry so much faster?

I'm also a fan of the tape that sticks to itself--it's good for burns and also moving parts. (Burn gel is the other major component of my first aid kit.)

And, if it is genetic, I'm double cursed. :)

  3. So for you it should not just be "don't run with scissors," but don't handle/use/go near knives, pointy things, cheese graters, or any tool with a sharp edge unless you're wearing thick gloves up to your elbows.

    1. We should probably upgrade that to full-on riot gear.

  4. If you ever get one of those mandolin slicer thingies, and it comes with a hand guard and instructions that say "always use the hand guard"... ALWAYS us e the hand guard. I sliced the tip of my index finger clean off. Bled like a stuck pig. Ouchie.

    1. Oh, geez. That sounds like something from a horror movie.

So, what do you do in that scenario? Stitches? Skin graft? Life with a short finger?
